Nyanyas of Niagara in Support of Stephen Lewis Foundation
Nyanyas of Niagara was founded in 2007 in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada, as one of over 100 Grandmother groups across the globe. Over the past ten years, Nyanyas of Niagara has submitted over $130,000 to the Foundation. Nyanyas means 'grandmothers' in Swahili.
The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign is a Stephen Lewis Foundation initiative, and global solidarity movement among grandmothers and grandothers around the world who have rallied to raise money in support of children orphaned by AIDS, and families living in communities disproportionately affected by HIV. Since the Campaign was launched in 2006 in response to the escalating crisis faced by grandmothers, more than $40 million has been raised in support of grandmothers and their community-led organizations across 14 countries on the continent. In the face of discrimination based on gender, age, and HIV status, grandmothers remain courageous leaders and advocates for their families and communities. This year is the 20th anniversary of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign.
The Stephen Lewis Foundation is a progressive organization rooted in the principles of social justice, international solidarity, and substantive equality. The SLF was created with the express purpose of supporting community-led organizations working on the frontlines of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in countries across Africa.
